SCHOOL MISSION and PHILOSOPHY

MISSION

Our mission at Sequoya is to meet the unique needs of each of our students through positive learning experiences which are academically challenging. Our school goal is to develop students who enjoy coming to school and will become life long learners.

PHILOSOPHY

Education should provide opportunities for all in a program to suit each individual child. Experiences should be academically challenging, wide in scope, child-centered and democratic, operating within a positive humanistic school climate. In meeting this commitment, Sequoya Elementary School is dedicated to promoting all phases of becoming life-long learners.

The educational philosophy of Sequoya is defined as follows:

1.         Provide each child with a program of studies and activities, which will bring about as much academic development as his or her potential allows.

2.         Encourage teachers to work as a cooperative team in providing an educational experience for each child that integrates all areas of the curriculum.

3.         Provide a staff which has high expectations of both itself and students in the pursuit of excellence.

4.                  Provide a stimulating environment that is child-centered and helps develop within each child a positive self-concept.

5.         Provide an atmosphere which brings about mutual respect and consideration for classmates, adults, and the property of
            others.

6.         Provide students opportunities to develop decision-making responsibilities necessary in a democratic society.

7.         Provide a program that offers opportunities for parents/guardians to become partners in helping children reach their potential by becoming actively involved in the education of their children both at school and at home.

8.         Encourage parent/guardian volunteers and business partnerships to enrich the educational experiences of the students.

9.         Provide a commitment to the philosophy of community education by operating a variety of programs for children through adults at Sequoya Community School.

10.       Provide information to students, home and community concerning the educational program and its
            progress at Sequoya Elementary School.
